history

Early years traditional owners

South Brisbane is a meeting place for traditional landowners, the Turrbal and Yuggera people.

1850-1893 – European settlement

South Brisbane became Brisbane’s business heart, until floods in 1893 forced the district to higher ground.

1930-1945 – A bustling river port

South Brisbane is a bustling river port and industrial zone buzzing with markets, wharves, dance halls and theatres.

1988 – World Expo 88

World Expo 88 breathes new life into South Brisbane, drawing more than 18 million visitors over a six-month period.

1989 – South Bank Corporation

South Bank Corporation is established to oversee redevelopment and manage the precinct’s future growth, post Expo-88.

1992 – South Bank opens

The 17-hectare South Bank Parklands opens to public, attracting 6.3 million visitors in the first year.

2024 – Future South Bank Master Plan
